The department was established in 1929 as part of the Samarkand Agricultural Institute. Over its development, it has undergone several transformations: from 1989 to 2004, it was known as "Surgery and Pharmacology"; from 2004 to 2017, as "Animal Anatomy, Physiology, Surgery, and Pharmacology"; from 2017 to 2018, as "Veterinary Surgery, Pharmacology, and Toxicology"; from 2018 to 2019, within the Samarkand Institute of Veterinary Medicine, as "Pharmacology, Toxicology, Veterinary Sanitary Expertise, and Hygiene"; from 2020 to 2021, as the "Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology." Since 2022, it has been operating under the name "Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology" as part of the Samarkand State University of Veterinary Medicine, Livestock and Biotechnologies.
Currently, the department is headed by Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor Y. Salimov. The department's staff includes PhD holders in Veterinary Sciences T.T. Xatamov, O.E. Nematullaev, A.T. Ibragimov, as well as assistants M.A. Sharapov, L.N. Khalilov, A.Z. Soyibov, N.J. Khujaeva, Laboratory Head K.S. Buranova, and laboratory technicians O.R. Yarkulova and N.Kh. Yakhshiyeva.
The department's leading faculty members have participated in the international "Twinning Program" project in collaboration with the University of Minnesota (USA) for the years 2020–2024.
Faculty members have completed training programs at prestigious foreign universities, conducted webinars, and delivered lectures both offline and online.
