The department was established in 1929 under the name "Department of Epizootology, Microbiology, Virology, and Veterinary-Sanitary Expertise." After the establishment of the Samarkand Institute of Veterinary Medicine in 2018, it operated as the "Department of Epizootology, Microbiology, and Virology." Since 2022, it has been functioning as the "Department of Epizootology and Infectious Diseases" within the Samarkand State University of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Husbandry, and Biotechnology.
The heads of the department were V.S. Zarubkinsky, K.P. Chepurov, I.I. Arkhangelsky, Sh.T. Rasulov, A.M. Akhmedov, N.G. Shatokhin, Kh.K. Burkhonova, M.P. Parmanov, Kh.K. Bozorov, Z.Zh. Shapulatova, and Z.E. Ruziyev.
Currently, the department's team consists of 11 teachers, including 2 professors, 1 associate professor, 1 doctor of sciences, 3 senior lecturers with a PhD, and 4 assistants. The department has a computer lab equipped with modern computers, as well as a state-of-the-art laboratory for "Veterinary Microbiology, Virology, and Immunology." In addition, the department runs a scientific club called " Young epidemiologist."
