How is the CREDIT-MODULE system being introduced at Samarkand State University of Veterinary Medicine, Livestock and Biotechnology?

On October 8, 2019, the President signed the Decree "On approval of the Concept of development of the higher education system of the Republic of Uzbekistan until 2030."The document states that “at least 10 higher education institutions in the country should be included in the list of the top 1,000 higher education institutions in the ranking of internationally recognized organizations (Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings, Times Nigher Education or Academic Ranking of World Universities). stage of transition to a credit-module system ”.
It was also noted that by 2030, 85% of all higher education institutions (HEIs) in the country, including 33 higher education institutions in the 2020/2021 academic year, will be transferred to the credit-module system.
How is the CREDIT-MODULE system being introduced at Samarkand State University of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Husbandry and Biotechnology?
Rector of the University, Professor Khudaynazar Yunusov answered our questions:
In the credit-module system, the greatest attention is paid to the independent study of students
It has been only 3 years since the introduction of this modern method of organizing education in our country - the credit-module system. At present, the Republic's universities are taught on the basis of the Bologna credit-module system. In particular, the Samarkand State University of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Husbandry and Biotechnology has the same system.
Needless to say, we cannot apply this practice directly to ourselves. We can only use a customized version of the system. In the credit-module system, the greatest attention is paid to the independent study of students. We cannot say that our students are fully ready to work independently. We need to prepare students for that first.
Let’s say the mastery in the system is 60 to 40. 40% of knowledge is given to students by teachers, and 60% must be studied by the student himself.
Theoretical sciences can be mastered independently, but applied sciences cannot be studied independently. There are more applied sciences in the fields of veterinary medicine, medicine and biotechnology. It is not enough to study independently to become a veterinarian, it is important to be under the supervision of teachers in practice and to participate in all processes.
So we can say that we are adapting the system to ourselves. According to our old system, a professor would have a specific annual workload of teachers, and teachers would have to teach 800 hours or a thousand hours a year. It would be a big mistake if we now load these hours on teachers in an arithmetic way (30 hours per credit) in the credit-module system, because the credit should be collected by the students, not them.
The student must collect 30 credits in 1 semester and 60 credits for one year. The average price of loans should be higher than 2.6. That is, the amount of credit that students must accumulate in a year is 60. If the academic year consists of two semesters, the student must accumulate 30 credits per semester.
If the bachelor's program is 3-4 years, the student must collect a total of 180 - 240 credits to obtain a bachelor's degree, and 60 - 120 credits to complete a 1-2 year master's program.
Some science can consist of 4 credits, some 8 credits and some 2 credits. Suppose a course is 60 hours, it can be 2 credits. But the sciences that study diseases can have 8 or 10 credits. The distribution of loans can cause some misunderstandings.
But this is a natural process - it changes from simplicity to complexity.
This system has just been introduced in our country, 1st and 2nd courses are taught according to the new system. The most advanced method of modern teaching. Having some misunderstandings is also a natural process.
The goal is to conduct teaching on the basis of innovative educational technologies, to teach students to independently research, to take a new approach to education, to acquire the necessary and in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical skills based on the needs of the labor market. This system focuses on the professional development and maturity of the student.
