EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION OF ESTABLISHMENTS FOR VETERINARY EDUCATION (EAEVE).

EAEVE (European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education) was founded in 1988 and is headquartered in Vienna, Austria. It is a leading non-governmental organization that coordinates, evaluates, and promotes quality standards in veterinary education across Europe.

Mission and Objectives

EAEVE’s main mission is to ensure and continuously improve the quality of veterinary education in accordance with European Union standards, particularly Directive 2005/36/EC, which defines the minimum training requirements for veterinary surgeons within the EU.

The Association:

- monitors compliance of veterinary curricula with European standards;

- evaluates study programs and course content;

- assesses clinical training, facilities, and infrastructure;

- ensures students acquire sufficient theoretical knowledge and practical skills;

- provides recommendations for quality improvement.

ESEVT Evaluation System

EAEVE operates through the European System of Evaluation of Veterinary Training (ESEVT). This system includes:

- preparation of a comprehensive self-evaluation report by the institution;

- an on-site visitation by an international team of experts;

- assessment of teaching quality, clinical exposure, research activity, and resources;

- accreditation status granted based on compliance with standards.

Accreditation is granted for a defined period and requires periodic re-evaluation to ensure continuous quality assurance.

Day One Competences

A key element of EAEVE standards is the concept of “Day One Competences.” These define the essential knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes that veterinary graduates must possess upon entering the profession.

They include competencies in:

- clinical examination, diagnosis, and treatment of animals;

- basic surgical and medical procedures;

- prevention and control of infectious diseases;

- food safety and veterinary public health;

- responsible use of veterinary medicines;

- professional ethics, communication, and legal responsibilities.

All competences must be achieved and formally assessed before graduation.

Membership and Importance

EAEVE includes more than 100 veterinary education establishments across over 30 European countries. Accreditation by EAEVE:

- confirms international recognition of educational quality;

- facilitates professional mobility within Europe;

- enhances the reputation and global competitiveness of institutions;

- strengthens opportunities for international collaboration and funding.

Conclusion

EAEVE plays a crucial role in harmonizing and safeguarding the quality of veterinary education in Europe. Institutions meeting its standards demonstrate their commitment to excellence, while graduates benefit from improved professional recognition and mobility across European countries.
