CAMPUS FOOD WASTE TRACKING

Reducing Food Waste at SSUV— A Step Toward a Sustainable Future

Samarkand State University of Veterinary Medicine, Livestock and Biotechnology (SSUV) is actively contributing to  Zero Hunger and promoting environmental responsibility through the implementation of a comprehensive initiative aimed at reducing food waste across the university campus.

This initiative, developed within the framework of the universitys Green Campus” concept, seeks to ensure the efficient use of food resources, minimize waste, protect the environment and foster a culture of sustainable and responsible consumption among students and staff.

Food Waste Tracking System

The Campus Food Waste Tracking System at SSUV involves the systematic monitoring and analysis of food waste generated in canteens, cafeterias and dormitory dining areas.

The system collects detailed data on:

  • uneaten meal portions,
  • food preparation waste,
  • and the reasons for discarded items.

This data enables the university to identify key causes of food waste, build a data-driven analytical base and develop practical solutions to address the issue effectively.

 Key Components of the Initiative

1. Data Collection and Monitoring:
Staff and volunteer students regularly measure food waste in dining facilities, record the causes and prepare analytical reports for further review.

2. Awareness and Education:
Under the motto Value Food — Protect Nature,” the university organizes environmental weeks, training sessions and interactive workshops to promote mindful consumption and sustainable food habits.

3. Portion Optimization:
Based on monitoring results, meal portion sizes are adjusted to meet actual consumption needs, reducing overproduction and leftovers.

4. Composting and Recycling:
Separated organic waste is processed into compost, which is then utilized in the universitys experimental farms, forage production areas and scientific research projects.

5. Scientific and Collaborative Approach:
The collected data is analyzed by students and researchers to support academic studies on sustainable food systems and develop new environmentally responsible practices in veterinary and agricultural sciences.

 Collaborating for Sustainable Development

The food waste tracking initiative forms a vital part of SSUVs broader sustainability and international cooperation strategy in veterinary and agricultural sciences.

Through close collaboration between faculties, departments, the student union and campus services, the university is:

  • significantly reducing food waste,
  • strengthening ecological awareness,
  • and contributing to innovation in sustainable agriculture and animal husbandry.

With these ongoing efforts, SSUV aims not only to create a waste-responsible campus, but also to contribute to regional and global food security, in line with the goals of  Zero Hunger and environmental sustainability.
